EBYBS Process - Draft
Regular Season Baseball Draft Process
East Boise Youth Baseball and Softball
1. Baseball Draft Process – The purpose of this is to outline of the process of drafting players. Historically there has been some disagreements over the details of what can happen and when. This process is intended to clarify the rules for all parties involved. It is expected that individuals involved in the draft handle themselves with a high level of respect and dignity throughout the process.
1.1. Rules of the draft
1.1.1. Privacy – It is expected that Managers and anyone else associated with the draft NOT talk about the position/round that any child is drafted. This includes discussions with their own child.
1.1.2. Draft Protection - Only the Manager's child is officially protected from the leagues perspective. Unless agreed to by the other managers, the Manager’s child must be taken in the second round if they are in the "oldest age" for the division, other wise they must be taken in the 3rd round. It is strongly encouraged by the league that the managers use reasonable judgment when determining draft rounds for their children. The kids in our league benefit from having evenly matched teams and forcing a Manager to select a “7th” round child in the second round does not support that goal.
1.1.3. Selection order - Unless otherwise agreed to by the Managers, the order of the draft selection is drawn from a hat. Draft order should be pre-arranged by the Managers when an inequity exists in playing level.
1.1.4. Assistant Coach - The Managers as a group can agree to “protect” assistant coach’s children. These details (who and what draft round) must be agreed upon in advance of the draft.
1.1.5. Timing - Draft round and placement of “protected” kids MUST be agreed to and written on the draft sheet prior to Draft time. If this is not done then that leagues draft policy automatically goes back to “Section 1.1.1” above.
1.1.6. Draft Pattern - The draft follows an “S” or snake pattern. IE, in a 5 team league the person that gets the first pick will then get the 10th and 11th pick respectively. The person that gets the 5th pick will get the 6th pick as it snakes down.
1.1.7. Disputes – Resolution of disputes is expected from the managers involved. When this does not occur the League VP will resolve the issue. Escalation beyond the League VP is to the President of the League.
1.2. Prior to Draft
1.2.1. The number of teams, team names, and managers are selected.
1.2.2. Managers get together and determine draft order and if assistant’s coaches will be allowed in the draft room.
1.2.3. Draft Sheets - Draft sheet are drawn up by the league and Managers children and any Assistant Coach children (if agreed to) selections are “pre-filled in”. If a child's name is NOT on the written draft sheet they are not protected, period.
1.3. Draft Time
1.3.1. Time – each selection will take no more than 1 minute. With 75-100 kids this is a long time.
1.3.2. Who – The league allows one person into the “draft room” during the draft. If the Managers as a group choose to allow a second person (assistant coach), they may do so.
1.3.3. Passing – each team is required to fill out their roster. IE, you can not skip drafting kids at the bottom of the draft in order to have fewer kids.
1.3.4. Draft sheet - Names are filled in on the draft sheet as the draft goes forward skipping those names that were protected. Any child not protected is eligible. There are no “unwritten protected kids".
1.4. After the Draft
1.4.1. Trades - Within 30 minutes of the end of the draft any trades need to have taken place and the League Secretary notified.
1.4.2. Notification of Team members – Within 24-48 hours of the draft all kids will be notified of their team via email. This will come from the league. As a coach you are encouraged to also call your kids and welcome them to your team. You will be provided an electronic roster at the time the team is notified via email.
1.5. Rules of thumb
1.5.1. The intention of the draft is to create a league where teams are competitive. You should select kids based upon their abilities as determined during assessments. Selecting kids significantly out of place because of friendships between kids and/or parents can cause your team to be not competitive and is discouraged.
1.5.2. Pitching and Catching is critical for your team to succeed and is typically your best early round selections.
1.5.3.All draft participants need to remember that conducting our draft with respect and dignity is what East Boise Youth Baseball & Softball is about. Please take a moment to read our Mission Statement.
